Meet my daughter. On her school’s Career Day, she chose to be a teacher. She was the only child in the entire school who wanted to become one.
Her sister dreams of being a doctor, and her brother aspires to be a soldier. Other professions had at least 20 students interested in them. But teaching? Just one.
So, parents, I ask: Why?
Are we, as parents, responsible for this trend, or is it the kids themselves? If our children aren’t inspired to become teachers, who will educate the next generation?
Teaching is undeniably a noble profession. But why are so few of our children choosing it?
I’ll admit, I’m no exception. Initially, I told my daughter I’d buy her a nurse’s uniform, but I forgot. Later, as her mother, I encouraged her to be a teacher—like me—because teaching is noble work.
But the reality is, in Nigeria, teachers are often undervalued and underpaid. And perhaps this is why children and parents alike shy away from the profession.
To the teachers reading this, don’t mind us, jare!
